LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Lexington Recycle Center will soon close for nearly three weeks to upgrade equipment and the city will not collect recyclables during that time.
Officials with the Division of Waste Management say a new conveyor belt, fire protection system and heaters are among the many things that will be installed during the closure. They also say maintenance will be performed on equipment not being replaced.
The upgrades are a part of a $2 million program that began last year, according to the city.
The center will be closed from January 6-19 and waste management will not collect recycled material during that time. They ask residents to hold the material until collection resumes on January 20.
Officials want to remind residents across Central Kentucky to only put plastic screwtop bottles and jugs, glass bottles and jars, steel and aluminum cans and dry cardboard in the blue recycling cart. Plastic bags should never be placed in the cart. Officials say unwanted items can harm equipment and put employees at risk.
