A Turkish newspaper has reported that former Nissan Motor chairman Carlos Ghosn jumped bail and secretly left Japan by evading immigration and hiding among cargo on private jets.
Ghosn allegedly departed Japan illegally and entered Lebanon last Monday using two private jets operated by a Turkish carrier. A ban on overseas travel was one of his bail conditions.
The Turkish paper Aksam on Sunday quoted sources as saying that two US nationals boarded the first jet in Dubai last Sunday and flew to Osaka. At that time, the jet was carrying two large boxes specially designed to contain audio equipment.
The newspaper reports that the boxes were too large to fit into an X-ray machine at an airport in Osaka so that hand-held detectors were used instead to check them. The paper quotes sources as saying Ghosn left Japan without going through immigration by using the boxes.
Sources are also quoted as saying that the two Americans told cabin attendants not to disturb them and kept them out of the guest room during the flight.
When the two changed flights to the second jet at Istanbul, a senior official at the airline company reportedly had the flight crew stay away during the procedures.
Turkish investigative authorities later arrested the official and are continuing investigations on their own.
