Last year, Rail Cargo’s RoLa (Rollende Landstrasse – Rolling Highway) services accounted for 170,243 trucks on the two routes – Brennersee-Wörgl and Maribor (Slovenia-Wels).
Capacity on the Brenner crossing linking North East Italy with Western Austria and Southern Germany has been increased to 250,000 trucks, partly through introduction of a new Trento- Wörgl service, and later this year will be increased to 400,000.
“All in all, this results in one RoLa train per hour and direction on the Brenner corridor when fully expanded,” said Rail Cargo. “If the available capacity is fully utilised, this would mean around 1,000 fewer trucks per day on the motorway.” Test runs were carried out in spring and autumn last year “showed that this train programme can be managed,” said the operator. To encourage uptake, prices have not been raised.
