A 70-foot fishing vessel out of Tiverton and a 605-foot tanker collided Monday about 25 nautical miles south of Martha’s Vineyard, the Coast Guard said.
No one was injured in the collision between the fishing vessel Edna May and the tanker Iver Prosperity, Petty Officer Third Class Ryan Noel said Tuesday.
The cargo ship was carrying petroleum on its inbound trip to Providence but no pollution was reported, he said.
Two small punctures on the starboard quarter of the tanker were discovered during an inspection of the ship at sea, but it is unclear if the damage resulted from the collision, he said. The fishing vessel only suffered minor cosmetic damage.
As of Tuesday morning, the cargo ship is in the Port of Providence and undergoing an inspection to determine its seaworthiness, he said.
The collision is under investigation by the Coast Guard, he said.
The Coard Guard received a Mayday call concerning the collision about 8:10 p.m. Monday over Channel 16, the emergency broadcast channel, he said. The Coast Guard cutter Coho, an 87-foot patrol boat, escorted the fishing vessel back to Tiverton.
The Coast Guard also launched a 64-foot Jayhawk helicopter and a 70-foot HC-144 Ocean Sensory fixed wing airplane out of Air Station Cape Cod.
