Big-name retailers are taking a firmer stance in sustainable meat production, and discount grocer Aldi is no exception. This week, the retailer unveiled a new supply chain strategy— dubbed the new Beef Cross Dairy Supply Chain model—to better source fresh Scotch Aberdeen Angus Beef and provide an economically sustainable solution across the buy- and supply-sides of the meat industry.

Graham Nicolson, Group Buying Director, Aldi Scotland“Aldi is the largest retailer for Scottish Origin Beef, and we’re consistently the strongest supporter of the domestic Scottish Red Meat industry as demonstrated by our performance in NFUS Shelf Watch during 2019,” said Graham Nicolson, Aldi Scotland’s Group Buying Director, according to the news source GlobalMeatNews.com. “We believe this is the right thing to do to support the industry in the long term and is the next evolution of our local fresh meat sourcing strategy.”

The new model—which integrates the dairy and beef supply chains from farm to retailer, as noted by the news source—will create a partnership between Aldi and Scotbeef, G Barbour & Company, Harbro, and Genus ABS.

“By bringing together partners at each stage in the supply of Scotch Aberdeen Angus Beef, we are confident our Beef Cross Dairy Supply Chain model will create a product of consistent high quality,” continued Nicolson. “We’re excited to be working with the Barbour family to trial the model this year and hope to be able to roll it out more widely across the Scottish business over the next five years.”

Richard Barbour, Farmer, G Barbour & CoG Barbour & Co’s Richard Barbour added, “This is a positive development for our industry, and we’re proud to be working with a forward-thinking supermarket like Aldi to develop an innovative new model for the procurement of Scotch Aberdeen Angus Beef.”

Aldi’s latest partnership and supply chain effort further builds on the retailer’s moves to implement traceability programs in its meat departments.
