If you ever get the chance to visit Stuttgart, Germany and see the modern-styled Porsche Museum, it’ll be easy to get carried away with just that place alone. It may be a treasure-trove of outstanding cars, but it’s matched by what lies in a warehouse a mere couple blocks away. What we’re talking about is a hidden mass of priceless Porsches.
Back in 2014, Porsche execs finally gave the media access to a secret collection of Porsches of all ages and models. The process was exciting, yet, nobody expected something of this magnitude. Though, as they’d come to find out, that unassuming building held pieces of Porsche’s greatest tales.
A ‘discovery’ (per say) of this level doesn’t happen all the time, which only enthralled enthusiasts even more. However, there were so many vehicles to go through; some of them remaining unknown. To illustrate how awesome that warehouse really is, we’re going to take an inside look at Porsche’s secret facility of race cars…
Hidden In Plain Sight
As stated in the introduction, the warehouse in question is just under the nose of Porsche’s illustrious museum in Stuttgart, Germany. Honestly, there’s no better place to put such a secret place. Few people would suspect a location that close to the museum, rather, one near their factory. Instead, it was sitting in plain sight.
You might assume that a vast amount of cars, just sitting in a facility, would be forgotten by the people who put them there at some point. Fortunately, that isn’t how it turned out, since many of the cars there are still in pristine condition.
Although the common enthusiast is, probably, not going to get the chance to visit this secret warehouse, the fact that it exists is cool enough! Next, we’re delving into what sort of Porsches are lying in wait…
More Than Just A Collection
To a diehard Porsche enthusiast, there’s only one word to describe this place: heaven. Think of any Porsche model and it’s likely somewhere in that warehouse; a few of which you’ve never even heard of before.
To go through every single vehicle in that place would be like making a novella of names, as they are so many. Nevertheless, the notable ones are quite something. The 906, GT3 WEC Race Car, original Volkswagen Beetles, 964’s, 996’s, Prototypes, multi-million dollar 959’s, and models we’ve never even heard of. All of these just scratch the surface of how many vehicles are tuna-packed into the old building.
Of course, these one-of-a-kind Porsches are valuable and unique, yet, there is a whole other position to take, as well. That warehouse is a motor sporting history book in physical form; housing decades of racing heritage under one roof. To be frank, this secret collection could rival the costly museums of brands like Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Mercedes-Benz.
Beyond Priceless
Now, the base versions of many of those vehicles are expensive as is, but these ones, in particular, go above and beyond the average. A good portion of the Porsches found aren’t the type you would see on the street, but at an R.M. Sotheby auction going for the price of a Hollywood mansion.
To put this into perspective, a Porsche 959 can go anywhere from $500,000 to $1 million+ and that facility has (at least) over six of them. Also, the 906 race car that’s close to the Ferrari 250’s price-tag and multiple test-mules that are literally priceless.
Though it may be a Porsche warehouse, Porsches aren’t the only vehicles there, however, just about every one of them is German-made (i.e. V.W. Bug, Audi 80 Wagon, etc.). All in all, there’s no better way to spend a weekend in Stuttgart than at that facility!
