Swissport has partnered with Unilode and Descartes to equip its cargo warehouses with Bluetooth sensors by the end of the year.
The move will enable Swissport to track and monitor unit load devices (ULD). Over the course of this year, Swissport’s cargo handling division plans to install 115 of its cargo warehouses with the sensors.
The Bluetooth sensors will offer increased transparency for customers using the digitally tagged ULD.
The geolocation enables real-time tracking and inventory control, allowing airlines and freight companies to effectively plan their ULD fleet distribution.
Swissport Global Operations – Cargo vice-president Hendrik Leyssens said: “Our cooperation with Unilode and Descartes and the introduction of global ULD tracking at our cargo warehouses create added value for our customers and drive the digital transformation of the cargo supply chain and the industry.”
Swissport has also invested in self-service cargo kiosks at its warehouses, eliminating its drivers’ needs to process paperwork manually.
The kiosks reduce processing times, resulting in faster deliveries for time-critical shipments.

The new facility is expected to open in the third quarter of the year. Swissport plans to reveal further Australian locations in the near future.
In December, German airport operator Fraport and Swissport Cargo Services Deutschland started the construction of Swissport’s new airfreight facility at Frankfurt Airport.
The new facility is said to be Swissport’s fourth-largest cargo centre.
Swissport International opened its second air cargo warehouse at Vienna International Airport last July.
