The Buffalo Diocese identified Friday more than 300 businesses and individuals who it expects to be its creditors – the ones it owes money to – when it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
And that doesn’t count the people who have filed 260 lawsuits against the diocese alleging they were sexually abused as children by priests, nuns and other diocese employees. The diocese withheld the plaintiffs’ names from its bankruptcy court petition.
The biggest unsecured creditor is M&T Bank, which the diocese says it owes $1.6 million.
But the list also contains dozens of businesses who provided services to the diocese, everything from a company that supplies candles to churches, to a burglar alarm firm and oil change garage, and The Buffalo News.
The creditors list even includes retired Buffalo Bishop Richard J. Malone, who retired early after coming under intense criticism for his handling of the clergy sexual abuse crisis.
