A CESSNA PLANE from CSA Air Inc. of Kingsford can be seen on its top after crashing at the Rhinelander-Oneida County Airport in Rhinelander, Wis., on Thursday.
RHINELANDER, Wis. (AP) — A pilot was injured after a single-engine cargo plane operated by a Kingsford company crashed while landing at the Rhinelander-Oneida County Airport on Thursday morning.
The single-engine Cessna 208 Caravan was arriving from Milwaukee about 8:15 a.m. when it flipped, coming to rest wheels-up between a taxiway and a runway, authorities said.
Rhinelander police confirm one person has been taken to a local hospital with a head injury. The pilot’s name was not released, nor was information available on that person’s condition.
Airport Director Matthew Leitner told WXPR public radio in Rhinelander the plane belongs to CSA Air Inc., an express cargo carrier based at Ford Airport in Kingsford.
The plane was a contract carrier for FedEx with a route in and out of Rhinelander, Leitner said. The CSA Air website states they handle 34 FedEx flights covering daily routes in five states.
The CSA office in Kingsford referred a call on the crash to FedEx. In a written statement, a FedEx spokeswoman later said the pilot was at the hospital “for observations.”
“We are thankful for the first responders who were dispatched to the scene, and we are fully cooperating with investigating authorities,” said Shannon Davis, a communications adviser with FedEx.
The airport remained locked down and closed to air traffic until mid-afternoon, when the Federal Aviation Administration completed its on-site inspection, according to WXPR.
All runways except one were reopened. Delta anticipated its passenger flights would return to schedule Thursday night.
FedEx plans to retrieve the plane today, Leitner told WXPR.
He did not speculate on a possible cause for the crash. Much of the Rhinelander area had heavy snow Thursday morning
