SOUTHEND Airport bosses have moved to allay fears over cargo planes from Italy and Spain continuing to land throughout the coronavirus crisis.

Residents had spoken of their fears over flights continuing to come in from Milan and Madrid.

Both Italy and Spain have seen a significant impact from the outbreak, with many areas placed into lockdown to contain the virus.

The airport’s response comes as it was announced most flights to and from the airport have been suspended as a result of the outbreak.

A spokesman said the cargo operation is playing an important role in helping to support the UK economy and protect jobs.

The spokesman added: “In response to some residents’ concerns we would like to reassure everyone that strict protocols are being followed at all times.

“However, at all times, our overriding concern is the health, safety and wellbeing of our workforce and everyone that we work with.

“All aircraft are thoroughly cleaned after each rotation.

“The aircraft crew, which consist of a pilot and an officer, don’t leave the aircraft when they land in Spain or Italy, and have no direct contact with other teams.”

One resident, who wished not to be named, said: “This situation must not be allowed to continue, and these flights must be suspended.

“We must protect UK citizens as much as possible during this ongoing pandemic.”

Glyn Jones, CEO of Stobart Aviation, which owns the airport, said: “This unprecedented time is exceptionally challenging for the airport.

“Our first priority is the safety of our employees and customers and I want to reassure you that we continue to follow Government advice and best practice.

“A Covid-19 action plan was developed in late February and is updated continuously as the Government response evolves.

“Deep cleaning processes and isolation areas have been introduced and we are providing employees with advice should they or anyone in their household display symptoms.

“Passengers are provided with advice and appropriate facilities on departure and arrival.”

An airport spokesman added: “Many people still love travel, experiencing other cultures and visiting new and exciting places. Our economy relies upon to a substantial degree on the fast movement of people and goods that aviation provides.

“The current circumstances are enormously challenging as well as fast moving but we will be ready to welcome our guests again when the time is right.”

Passengers who are due to fly from Southend Airport are being encouraged to check with individual airlines. Go to www.southendairport.com.
