The port of Luanda processed 1.64 million tonnes of cargo in the third quarter of 2019, a real drop of 318,250 tonnes or 16.2% compared with the same period of 2018, according to the Statistical Bulletin of state company Porto de Luanda.
The bulletin published by the company and quoted by the Angop news agency also showed that containerised cargo fell by 16%, while bulk cargo fell 29%.
The port of the Angolan capital in the period under review received 112 vessels, 15 long–haul coastal shipping vessels and 874 vessels to support oil sector activities.
The frequency of arrival for sea–going vessels was approximately 1.2 vessels per day, or a drop of 12% compared to the same period of the previous year.
Statistical data on production in recent years, available on the company‘s website, showed that the cargo handled at the port reached a peak of close to 14 million tonnes in 2014, having been declining since then.
On 16 December the Angolan government launched an international public tender for exploration of the multipurpose terminal in the Port of Luanda, having given a deadline of 30 March 2020 for interested companies to submit their proposals.
The Multipurpose Terminal of the Port of Luanda is a port facility for both general cargo and containers, has a 610–metre quay, a depth of 12.5 metres and an area of 181,000 square metres with capacity to handle 2.6 million tonnes of cargo per year.
