KURUKSHETRA: The Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) Haryana has objected to the 25% capping on the procurement of mustard and gram on behalf of Nafed by the Hafed, and demanded from the state government to ensure purchasing 100% crop in the state.
As per sources, the Government of India (GOI) has accorded approval of procurement of maximum 3,08,700 metric ton (MT) mustard seed and 12,750 MT gram (chickpea) in the state of Haryana under the price support scheme (PSS) on behalf of Nafed.
Sources told the procurement period for mustard seed and gram is from April 15, 2020, to June 30, 2020, and the GOI has fixed the minimum support price (MSP) at Rs 4,425 for mustard seed and Rs 4,875 for gram. As per the information, the mustard and gram will be initially procured from 71 purchase centres in Haryana by Hafed, on behalf of Nafed.
It is notable that under its mode of purchase, the Hafed will be procuring mustard seed and gram stock only from the farmers registered on the ‘Meri Fasal Mera Byora’ portal of the state government.
Criteria on Average Yield
Based on the registered gross area of cultivation, a net of 8 quintal mustard seed per acre and 3.83 quintal gram per acre shall be procured on MSP. Moreover, it should also be ensured that the quantity of procurement of mustard seed and gram in a district does not exceed 25% of the production of mustard seed in that district.
BKU (Haryana) state president Gurnam Singh Charuni said, “The number of purchase centres in Haryana is very less and these centres should be in every grain market of the state. In Ambala and Kurukshetra, only one each purchase centre has been established, and procuring the crop from the whole of these two districts is not possible from one each centre. Therefore, the purchase centres should be made at the block level, so that, the farmers can easily sell their products without any rush at one particular place in this situation of Covid-19.”
“The government has kept a capping of procuring 25% crop in each district, whereas, the government has been promising to purchase every single seed of the crop from the farmers. The government should give an answer that where would the farmers go with the remaining 75% crop, and where shall he sell the same and at what price. In this time of Covid-19 pandemic, the government shall ensure 100% procurement of wheat, mustard, and gram.”
