Ludhiana: Day after compensation for land acquisition for Halwara airport was announced by the state government, city businessmen have welcomed the move. They have also urged the government to expedite the work of the airport and also demanded a cargo terminal to boost the international trade from the city and nearby districts.
According to president of the Knit and Fab Hosiery Association, Vipan Vinayak, “Day before yesterday, Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority (Glada) announced awards for people whose land is being acquired by department for the construction of international airport at Halwara. It shows that state government is very serious about the construction of the airport. Everyone should appreciate the efforts of state government as the long-pending dream of Ludhiana is going to become reality very soon. However, we request chief minister Amarinder Singh to make sure that all the departments that have been entrusted with the task of getting Halwara airport constructed specify a deadline for the completion and work should be completed within that period. A full-fledged air cargo terminal too should be constructed here to facilitate trade and industry.”
According to Jagbir Singh Sokhi, president of Sewing Machine Development Club, “Once constructed, the Halwara airport will give a big push to Ludhiana’s industry and will save a lot of time and money for businessmen by connecting Ludhiana with Delhi and other major cities of India and the world. I think a cargo terminal will also be very useful as there is a huge demand for cargo services from Ludhiana businessmen who presently have to send their goods to Delhi first in order to despatch them by air to other destinations.”
According to Umesh Duggal, a hosiery businessman of city, “If cargo terminal is constructed in Halwara, it will not only benefit Ludhiana’s industry but also nearby districts as well. Even farmers would benefit from this service as they could supply their fresh produce to anywhere in the country and world.”
