Daviess County Fiscal Court voted in approval Thursday to apply for two Kentucky 2020-2021 Pride Fund Grants totaling more than $350,000. These two applications are going toward a composting and household hazardous waste management Tox-Away Grant.
Director of Legislative Services David Smith said the composting grant worth $350,000 would go toward a new windrow turner for the Daviess County Landfill.
The current windrow turner was aged and used at the time it was purchased and is nearing 30 years of use, Smith said.
The County would match the $350,000 grant with $88,000 in cash in order to purchase the new piece of equipment.
Smith said this composting grant is funded by a $1.75 tax levied on every ton of trash that goes into landfills across the state of Kentucky.
The second grant, the Household Hazardous Waste Management Tox-Away grant, is worth $40,000 and would go toward the County’s Tox-Away Day program.
“We started this program two years ago and it’s been extremely popular,” Smith said. “It gives residents the chance to get rid of the material they should not be putting in our landfill or dumping down the sewers.”
Fiscal Court collected more than 70,000 tons of household hazardous wastes at the road department last year.
The $40,000 grant would be matched by Fiscal Court with $5,000 cash and some in-kind labor, Smith said. This is grant is also funded by the $1.75 tax levied on every ton of trash that goes into landfills across the state.
