SAN FRANCISCO — The head officer of a cargo ship has been charged with setting sail for South Korea while he was legally drunk, court records show.
Vadim Humenyuk, of Ukraine, was charged Thursday in federal court with a misdemeanor count of operating a nonrecreational ship while under the influence. The charge carries a maximum penalty of a year in jail or a $100,000 fine.
According to the criminal complaint, Humenyuk is the head officer of the Gibraltar-flagged cargo ship called the Rainbow Quest, a 590-foot, 22,549-ton craft. On Dec. 10, the day of the alleged offense, the Rainbow Quest was set to raise anchor and head to South Korea, after stopping in the San Francisco Bay for fuel.
