Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation (TNCSC) has been procuring samba paddy from farmers in the delta districts. So far 5.40 lakh tonnes of paddy have been procured through 1,655 DPCs including the 310 centres functioning in other districts.
From 443 DPCs in Thanjavur district alone, 1.90 lakh tonnes of paddy have been procured by TNCSC authorities till February 13, officials said.
Meanwhile, farmers raised complaints against officials and workers of DPCs as they demand bribe between Rs 30 to Rs 40 for a bag of paddy. The farmers also alleged that the staff gave priority to merchants rather than farmers.
Following the complaints, food minister R Kamaraj along with ADGP, Civil Supplies Corporation CID wing Prateep V Philip conducted inspections at various DPCs in Thanjavur a few days ago.
During the visit, the minister said that 12 committees have been formed to monitor the procurement process to curb any irregularities.
Based on the monitoring committee’s reports, the district collectors of Thanjavur, Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur dismissed 45 workers from various DPCs, officials from the respective districts said.
This includes 16 workers from Thanjavur. Authorities have slapped a fine of Rs 29,716 for clerical mistakes done by them in accounts.
