MUMBAI: Lifeline Udan, a government initiative for air transport of medical cargo and essential supplies across India has so far operated 74 flights. A total of 37.63 tonnes of cargo has been transported till date out of which more than 22 tonnes was transported on Tuesday alone, said the ministry of civil aviation in a statement released on Wednesday.
Currently, domestic and international passenger flights are banned till April 14 to check the spread of COVID-19. The only passenger flights departing Indian airports are special relief flights to carry stranded foreigners abroad. However, cargo flights have been air connecting cities across India flying essentials.
At the forefront of ‘Lifeline Udan’ were Air India flights “from Mumbai to New Delhi to Guwahati to Mumbai which carried consignments of Meghalaya , Assam, ICMR, consignment of Nagaland, Arunachal, and Pune,” said the ministry.
Another lot of Air India flight flew from New Delhi to Hyderabad to Trivandrum to Goa to Delhi and carried consignments of Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, ICMR.
An Alliance Air flight from Hyderabad to Bengaluru return carried consignment of ministry of textiles.
Among the other such flights were Air India Chennai-Port Blair return, an IAF flight from Hindon (Delhi) to Port Blair via Sulur.
“Air India and IAF collaborated for Ladakh, Dimapur, Imphal, Guwahati and Port Blair,” said the ministry adding that a dedicated medical air cargo related website has been launched and has been made fully functional from Wednesday. The link is available on the MoCA website (www.civilaviation.gov.in).
Among the domestic cargo operator, Blue Dart and Spicejet have been operating cargo flights on commercial basis.
