Grocery stores across the country are dealing with bare shelves as shoppers stock up on supplies amid the coronavirus pandemic.

San Antonio leaders have warned against panic buying, but their appeals have fallen on deaf — or desperate — ears.

H-E-B posted signs in stores warning that the chain had implemented temporary purchase limits on certain items.

Now, the company has stiffened those limits.

“We understand our customers want to prepare by stocking up on the essentials,” the company said in a statement. “Texans must continue to prepare, but panic does not promote progress.”

H-E-B noted that it is in a good position long term with in-stock supplies.


“To help protect the supply chain in Texas, we’ve implemented temporary purchase limits on certain items,” the company said.

The stores also announced that they will not accept returns on items like toilet paper and frozen food.
