Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), India’s leading container port, achieved a new throughput record in the calendar year 2019, handling 5.1 million teu, up from 5.05 million the year before.
APM Terminals Mumbai, which operates as Gateway Terminals India, confirmed its position as the leading terminal at JNPT, handling around 2 million teu during the year, followed by DP World’s NSIGT facility which recorded a throughput of 990,000 teu. The port’s newest container facility, PSA’s BMCT, recorded 820,000 teu for the year, the port authority owned JNPCT 770,000 teu and the smaller DP World NSICT facility around 520,000 teu.
Highlights of the past year for JNPT included the signing of the new Inter-Terminal Rail Handling Operation (ITRHO) Agreement between all the terminals at JN Port, which came into effect in August 2019. This has helped improve operational efficiency, reduce container dwell times and increase the share of the rail mode in containers moving to and from JNPT.
