The Cenla Chamber of Commerce and the Cenla Regional Port hosted a ribbon cutting to open the new Cool Planet warehouse facility. Cool Planet is an agriculture technology company that develops and markets products for soil health.
Cool Planet was once involved in bio-fuels but decided to make a switch and be a part of the ag-tech community, where they’ve found much success with their product, Cool Terra. Site manager Steve Davison explained its benefits for agriculture.
“It is a soil amendment, and it is used in the growth of turf nursery and ornamentals and crop production,” said Davison. “It helps establishment seed germination in plants, helps with microbial activity in the root base of the plants. You talk about the atmosphere. So, our product sequesters carbon instead of releasing carbon. So we’re being environmentally friendly, we’re improving the environment by not releasing carbon into the atmosphere. The growth of organic foods is important to a lot of folks.”
The facility will also have an economic impact here in Cenla, and this is just the first step for the company. Davison says there are plans to expand in the future.
“Economic impact. We’re looking at jobs created for 35-40 people once we’re at a full, 24-hour operation. And we’re looking at that targeting 2021. This is just the first stage of our footprint here. But, we have more to do. We have a plant to build to process our product here in Alexandria.”
