The Port of Savannah logged its busiest February, handling 364,405 20-foot equivalent container units of cargo, a 17 percent increase from February 2019 levels, Georgia Port Authority officials announced last week.
March volumes are expected to dip due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, they said in a press release.
“We are thankful for the confidence our customers continue to show in Georgia’s reliable transportation networks amid such uncertainty in the market,” said Griff Lynch, the port authority’s executive director. “The strong fundamentals at the deepwater ports of Savannah and Brunswick have fueled powerful expansions in our cargo volumes and market share; they will also help us to weather the current storm related to COVID-19 disruptions.”
Current efforts to keep cargo flowing during the health crisis include adding new capacity for container storage, allowing some workers to telecommute, and strict observance of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Georgia state policies to prevent the spread of COVID-19, port officials said.
