Trying out some of the new sensory toys are (from left) Jin Perry, 2 1/2, Franco Senekal, 2, and Leon Perry, 11 months.
Sensory toys have been added to Ashburton Toy Library’s vast collection of play things.
A grant from Advance Ashburton has enabled the toy library to purchase 11 sensory toys for children with developmental needs and for others to enjoy.
Sensory toys are specially designed to engage a child’s attention both cognitively and physically by stimulating one or more of the five senses.
The community funding grant has also enabled the toy library to upgrade its library software system to Mibase NZ, which means that over time all 900 toys in the collection will be photographed and posted online for members to see.
Toy library members usually hire toys for a two week period and toys come in all shapes and sizes. Other items are categorised for role play, dress up, games and puzzles and theme packs.
Ashburton Toy Library recently celebrated its 25th birthday. Its rooms are at 106 Victoria Street and it is open on Thursdays and Saturdays from 9.30am until 12.30pm.
